National Director's October 2014 Update
Updated On: Oct 304, 2014

October 31, 2014

Dear Members:

On October 1, 2014, the National Executive Council met with the Vice Presidents of Maintenance and Safety from both Alaska and Southwest Airlines in San Diego, CA regarding our Safety Initiative. We shared our PowerPoint presentation and discussed an array of safety concerns that we both share. We agreed to work together in our mutual commitment to providing a safe work area and product, and to step up communications on safety related issues. Additionally, Safety & Standards Director David Brooks will be reaching out to both carriers to arrange meetings in the near future to further our work on the concept of joint safety working groups designed to identify and correct safety issues for our members. You should expect to hear more regarding the Safety Initiative as we move forward.

The Southwest Airlines (SWA) Facility Maintenance Technician (FMT) negotiations continued on October 14, 2014, in Dallas, Texas. The next scheduled session is November 3-4. Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) negotiations also continued this month on October 15-16, 2014, and the negotiation updates (video and written) for all sessions have been posted to the AMFA National Website. The next scheduled session for AMT’s is November 12-13 in Dallas, Texas.

AMFA attended the SWA Labor Coalition meeting on October 23, 2014. There was discussion regarding the status of negotiations from the various groups on property as well as a review of the recent SWA earnings report. The Norwegian Air request to fly to the United States was also a topic of discussion and concern amongst those in attendance.

The Annual Membership Survey is about to begin. Information will be sent to your home address on record in November. We value your input and encourage you to participate. Also, the local officer election cycle is in full swing, so pay attention to your local’s website and bulletin boards for the latest information. Cast your vote and fill out the survey as these are two opportunities to have a direct impact on AMFA, the most democratic union representing our craft today.

For more carrier specific updates and further information regarding AMFA and the airline industry, please visit the AMFA National Website at www.AMFANational.org. Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Louie Key
National Director
