National Director's November 2014 Update
Updated On: Dec 335, 2014

November 28, 2014

Dear Members:

During the first week of November Tim Cullen, Local 14 President and Aircraft Engineers International (AEI) – Secretary of The Americas, and I attended AEI’s 42nd Annual Congress in Paris, France. This year’s Congress was well attended; there were thirty-three delegates from seventeen different countries representing fourteen Aircraft Maintenance Technician/Engineer unions. As the Australian affiliate put it best, “We Are the Guardians of Air Safety,” and this year’s Congress focused primarily on the role of the AMT and the array of challenges we face as we do our jobs in a stressful environment. Universally AMTs are facing the same obstacles wherever you look. Issues such as unrealistic work package schedules, inadequate staffing, airlines attempting to push more of our work to vendors or to the unlicensed workforce are not unique to any particular sector. We need to be aware of the implications of these schemes and work with other organizations that share our craft focused attention to these issues. All of the affiliates of AEI are AMT specific unions. Mr. Cullen will soon be posting a detailed Secretary of the Americas report from this year’s Congress.

The Southwest Airlines (SWA) Facility Maintenance Technician (FMT) negotiations continued on November 3-4, 2014, and the Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) negotiations continued on November 12-13, 2014 in Dallas, Texas. The negotiation updates (video and written) for all sessions have been posted to the AMFA National Website. The next scheduled session for FMTs is December 8-9, 2014, and the AMTs are scheduled for December 10-11, 2014 in Dallas, Texas.

At Alaska Airlines the annual October wage adjustment has gone into effect and the membership has been notified.

The AMFA National Survey is open through December 2, 2014, so please submit your survey as soon as possible. Your input will be used to ensure that we continue to meet your needs.

As we celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday this week with our families, please take a moment to be thankful for those dear to you and remember those who cannot be there with you. After the AEI Congress concluded I traveled to Normandy, France to visit the Normandy American Cemetery on Veteran’s Day; this year is the 70th anniversary of D-Day. We have many veterans in our membership and when you are fortunate enough to visit a memorial site like this one, you are extremely thankful for the sacrifices of all the men and women who have served, or are serving, in our military. Thank You!

Sincerely,

Louie Key
National Director
