AMFA Announces Card Drive for AMTs and Maintenance Controllers at Spirit Airlines

CENTENNIAL, CO – December 11, 2019 – On the heels of having won its representational election at Horizon Air, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) announced that a union card drive has begun at Spirit Airlines — the self-proclaimed ultra-low-cost carrier headquartered in Miramar, Florida. While it is unusual for AMFA to publicize card drive initiatives, given that the Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (AMTs) at Spirit Airlines are currently non-unionized, it is important to build awareness that this significant initiative is underway.

AMFA is excited about the internal, grass-roots movement to organize this group. AMFA had a consultative relationship with the Spirit Airlines during their contract negotiations earlier this year, and we are now encouraged by their drive to pursue the representation of AMFA.

“Spirit Airlines employees, from its pilots to its passenger service agents have union representation,” says Bret Oestreich, AMFA National Director. “It is high time and overdue that their aircraft maintenance technicians and controllers did as well.”

“Having spoken to a lot of the AMTs and Controllers who work for Spirit, they feel the company has spent years making hollow promises on issues like wages and benefits, but they never follow through,” said Gene Painter, AMFA Assistant National Director. “The employees want a voice on the job. They want to have a say in determining their future, their benefits, their working conditions, and their job security.”

Spirit Airlines maintains a fleet of 128 Airbus aircraft, according to its 2018 Annual Report. The company prides itself on outsourcing much of its maintenance work, a practice AMFA would like to see limited, if not stopped altogether, based on safety concerns. Eighty percent of Spirit Airlines employees are unionized, but the AMTs are not.

AMFA currently represents AMTs at Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, and Southwest Airlines, and is the only American union specializing in the craft of airline maintenance.
